Go Up Go Down

My pride and joy has gone absolutely schizophrenic, wondering if any one has any suggestions on possible problem, first the machine went mental sending out false signals everytime I swung it side to side. then when i turned it on it is constantly make a rapid beeping ( belltone ) then it was registering on the needle, but not making any sound . now it doesn't seem to want to turn on at all. problem seemed to begin when I tried to use alkaline battries for the first time. If I take it apart does anyone know if I have to undo all the screws or just some of them. I really want to get the old girl going again, as it was given to me, by a friend I met doing fund raising. For our local disabled school, my daughter used to go there but we lost her at age 10. and there is an autistic lad there who communicates and he wants me to teach him how to use it. I don't have the money to replace it, and have no idea what kind of money Garrett would want to fix it. I'm hoping it's not a serious problem and that I might be able to fix it. the problem seemed to be intermittent at first. so I am hoping its maybe a loose wire or something inside. I have got myself an Ace 350 to replace it. and my only other machine is an ADS2 Gold Hunter, and I figure that's going to be way to hard to teach him to use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance
Gozzo

I would start with the battery compartment if it started changing batteries.

Alkiline batteries didn't hurt your machined unless it was ready to fail already.

Check for loose battery springs connectors or what ever it uses.

I'll look around and see what I can find about it. Cool

Bang on the money, Homie. Had a look at the battery holder today. there are acid stains ( Brownish Gunk ) inside it and it would appear one of the sping contacts has come into contact with the acid. fiddled with it, with needle nose pliers and it started to break into pieces, it's very brittle. So put the trusty Fluke meter on it and checked for continuity, and that is quite sporadic at best. Anyone know a supplier who might seel the spring contacts. I am going to contact Garrett and see if they still sell the battery holders or maybe even the springs. If anyone has a dead CX11 I would be interested in buying the battery holder from you.
Thanks
Gozzo

Could you post a photo of them?

I've never been in side one of those.

Garrett should be able to support ya on this one.

Got it firing again today, but it wont respond to ANY of the controls except on and off. however it is still detecting found a bottle top and lol a condom packet so glad it wasn't the used inside contents lol, what that was doing in a tot lot is anyones guess lol. Cant even turn down the Audio threshold so im guessing it's a micro processor problem and way outta my hands and capabilities. which suck's. But it is over 20 years old. Bring on the Ace 350. The guy who sold me that has only just mailed it today, but threw in a garrett cap, backpack, plugging tool, headphones for a better price than my local dealer who wants just under $400 just for the machine. If anyonewants old mates details PM me I promised I would let folks here know he does a good deal.

Now it sounds like the Membrain Switchs.

Did you open the machine up?

Did you mess with a ribbon cable coming from the Controls?   LOL

No i havent been game to open it but i was wondering if one of the ribbon cables had maybe come loose, but since its never been opened and I havent dropped it or subjected it to a serious knock, i was unsure of wheter that would be a cause but i am seriously thinking of opening it, it couldnt be to much different to a computer inside.

I have no idea what the beast is like inside.

My guess is the cable or more contamination is the problem.

Lol I will send some pics when I rip her open, it's gotta be done or I will never know if it doesn't have an obvious problem I will have to bite a bullet and send it back to Garrett, because despite it's age its a great coin/relic hunter. if it's dead then i will have a couple of nice crossfire coils for sale lol. the 12.5" hasn't even been used. looks like it just came from the shop. Mind you the other one isn't much worse off as it's always been used with a skid plate. I was drinking with my mate today, he is the guy that gave it to me. He said today that the last set of batteries he had in it did leak as he had left it in the back of his Ute and the rain had it's way with it and the batteries leaked in it. So with some luck it just needs an internal clean up. however its strange the on and off work. but not the all metal and pin point, since they are all on the same panel. plus the controls on the side don't work. but i have drank a slab ( case ) of beer today so might not be a good idea to rip her open tonight lol

Some of the solder joints have brown stains around them that means they are dry or burnt doesnt it ?? ill jump on my other pc and upload some pics of the circut boards. as this pc doesn't have any USB ports. It is seriously old.
