Fisher Gold Bug 2

Thinking about getting an Ace 250 for a coin machine. Anyone have any idea how deep these can go with the standard 6" x9" coil as well as the 4 inch sniper coil?  Have to decide between a new  Ace 250 or an older, used  coin model from Whites or Fisher. Don't want to spend more then $250.00 on a machine. Comments would be appreciated.

Steve

Depth is not only about the detector and its capability. A lot of it relies on conditions of soil, mineralization and the biggie - operator skill.

Learn your machine. Stuff you missed when you first started will be yours after a few months of working with it.

Just buy one. You'll like it.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

My normal detector is the Gold Bug 2 and I rarely get skunked using it even if I find  only a piece of gold 1/10th  the size of a pinhead. This coin machine adventure is a little different for me.

The 250 is definatly a coin magnet. You just can't go wrong with it in dirt.....but salt water you need to turn the sensitivity down...but still usable...at least that is what i've read. Get one and pratice....also consider a propointer...worth the extra money once you can afford it...good luck

Yep, Ace 250 and Pro-pointer.  That's a powerful combo for coins.

Had my ace 250 for a week and I am really impressed with it.  Seems coins are no problem the depth gauge works really well with coins.  Foil and trash will give a bouncy signal and the depth with bounce sometimes also.  Gold will show as nickel sometimes but look for repeatable signals.

I'm also considering upgrading to a new m/d, and can't decide on what to get? I received the Garrett pro pointer yesterday, and it had a nice little booklet written by Mr. Garrett himself and of course complimenting the wonderful line of M/D's in it. He specifically mentioned the ace 150, and 250. My current one is a Whites (probably about 10 years old model) with no meters, just two knobs on it and that's it. It's a very basic model. So, I'm wanting a one-button turn on and go type of machine.. knowing the depth sure would be helpful too. If there are other brands that are just as competitive around the same price-range, please speak up and let me know. What does Bounty Hunter offer? How about Whites?

unless you want to go for one of the high end models, I'd stay away from Bounty Hunter--although the Teknetics made by the same company seem to be pretty good.

I've got a White's detector that is comparable to the Garrett Ace 250 or 300.   It's reliable and in some ways my wife prefers it to the Garrett GTA 550 that is her primary machine.  Unfortunately it's out of commision at the moment due to a short in the coil wire.

I WOULD take a really good look at Tesoro, though (and no, I don't own stock in the company).  They are well-built, dependable machines that just keep moving up my wish list for my next detector.

I think if it were me, as much as I've enjoyed the older Whites, in this price range I'd have to go with either the Garrett or a Tesoro.
