Adrian, that is a normal thing and I just checked the manual to be sure. Guess what, everyone? Garrett has removed the paragraph about the detector being a motion machine.
Here's a synopsis of what they seem to have left out. Your coil must be kept in motion during detecting. If you stop swinging it, the coil nulls itself to the target and the sound goes away. You can learn to pinpoint by slowing your scan rate which will make the area generating the sound a bit smaller. It takes practice so get out there and use it. Tell your wife I told you that you have to go and do it.
For a brief explanation about the motion theory, the pulsed VLF/TR signal can be much stronger if kept on for less time and pulsed more frequently. If you keep it on like in older detectors with less power, the electronics would be damaged. Systems that have a pinpoint system built in reduce the power during that process so as good as pinpointing is, you can lose a deeper target due to it.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
