Hi all ive just seen this thread. I have a Garrett GTAx550 and it does exactly what was said. I went into a small field and all the signals from the old cans where displayed as coins and had the distinct bell sound. It drove me crazy after the first 20 holes i dug.

HI there, you will find that on most detectors that this is the case, what you need to do is put it in the pinpoint mode and see if it is a long signal or a shory one if a coin sized target is under your coil then it will be a short target and if it is a can the signal will be longer one way than it is the other and listen to the sound weather it is rough or smooth OK, J

Thanks for that info Auminesweeper.
I never knew that about the pinpoint mode. I thought about keeping all the scrap and taking it to sell it. Its amazing what can learn from other people's expierences. Thats what makes this such a wonderful forum
