The knobs are ten turn but I can't seem to get it balanced. I've found gold with it in little pockets of sand on bedrock but not in soil.

One of the biggest failings of a 10 turn pot is knowing where you are regarding the turns. I recommend you replace the knob with a vernier knob so you can record your settings for a location and accurately reset them when you return. It also gives you a sort of bullseye or a starting point rather than just whirling the knob around.

There are also quite a few Bournes (manufacturer) potentiometers with vernier knobs on eBay which are cheaper then the knob alone. Just be sure your shaft size is the right size for the knob.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks GD I will get one and see if it helps me. I'm pretty impatient with detecting . I dredge with better results. I live by the first mining towns in Oregon and I know there's a gold coin with my name on it somewhere close!
