Browsing through posts I'm noticing a lot of concern with salt water but not much in regard to fresh water issues. I am looking at the ACE 350 would that be suitable in a shallow fresh water environment as in shoreline areas? The idea of putting high tech devices in any water source sends chills up my spine but if it it will work I ould probably deal with it... thanks in advance for your replies!  Detecting  Cool

Salt water has issues because of mineralization which is caused by the salt itself mixing oxides into solution and also due to the presence of something called black sand. Black sand is actually iron oxides created by rusting metals in salt water. They don't rust like they do in air. Most of the metals are from ores rather than man made objects.

Fresh water doesn't suffer from this kind of thing very often. If the water is clean enough to swim in, there won't be significant amounts of black sand or mineralization. The Ace 250 will be just fine as long as you never submerge the electronics box. I'd advise you of one thing. Get out of the habit of putting it down while you make your recovery. Make a loop that goes around your next of elastic and suspend it from that when you recover an object. All it takes is one forgetful moment and your detector could be ruined.

Thanks for the information, I live in an area that is surrounded by small lakes rivers a lot of history and recreation takes place in these area so I definitely want to be able to search water areas... the "security" lanyard is a good idea much like a camera strap on a camera. Thanks again for the info!  Detecting

I recently purchased an ACE 350 great machine.  But the ACE series are NOT water proof.  If you intend to do much in the water you might want to put the extra money into getting an AT Pro.  I kind of wish I had at this point, so that may be an upgrade down the road.

You will love the ACE as long as you keep the control box out of the water -  [detecting]Happy Hunting

Not really thinking about full submersion detecting but more shallow shoreline areas. I'm just concerned that if I avoid those areas I may be missing rich territory, I may have to wait until an upgrade to fully exploit those opportunities. I keep imagining flipped kayaks and canoes which lead to TREASURE!  Detecting Thanks for the feedback it's greatly appreciated.  Beer Chug

You should look at the Tesoro Tiger Shark - fantastic on land and in the water submerged or wading. Hot on gold jewelry. I was expecting it to be as good as my Tesoro Compadre but it turned out to be my best underwater machine and at a really good price from KellyCo.

Thanks I will look into that one... so many options it's worse than buying a new car!  Smiley
