Go Up Go Down

The cheap on-the-ear headset that came with my Ace 250 failed just above the jack...No surprise, anyone that has on-the-ear phones for qany kind of sound system expects that type of failure sooner or sooner. So I perused Fleabay until I found what I thought would be a rugged replacement for them and bought them at the buy-it-now price $19.99 with about $8 dollars shipping. Garrett 1600 series new-old-stock over the ear cups stereo/mono with left and right pots on the cup. What could go wrong?

I should have asked for advice from the forum.

The pots seem to be intermittent with opens that leave one phone or the other dead when I fire up the detector. wiggle them a little and the sound comes on. I had used them only a few minutes before the right knob fell off into the grass and I have yet to find it. I took the liberty of examining the original box to find that they were manufactured for Garrett in Taiwan, which was, to me, a disappointment.

I will not "thump" the seller,... you know... Caveat Emptor and all that.  Oh well. Wish I hadn't sold the headset that went with the old ADS III.

They might be knockoffs of the Tiwan units.

could be, but the box is obviously old and looks legitimate. The set has the heft and feel of a quality set but...Hell... I'll just wear my surplus tank commanders helmet. That won't draw any attention

also the model no. is 16000 not 1600 as the seller described it.

Too late, Poptop. He sent it to me, too.

Your headphones can be repaired. That's the good news. Both sets.

I can't recall what type of connector is on your headphones that fits into your machine but if it is a 1/4 inch phone plug type, use this kind of connector with the spring stress relief on it (see attached). When you take the old one off, write down where each wire goes. If you can't see them as in a molded plug, use an ohm meter to scratch on the wire to the headset after you remove the plug. Normally the black wire is the common and red and white go to each earphone.

The plug will have three sections. The very front is called the Tip. The middle is the Ring and the largest near to the wires is the ground. So you have tip, ring and ground. The ground gets the black wire, the ring gets the left earphone and the tip gets the right one. Solder the wires on. Before you do, make sure you have slid all the screw on components onto the wire.

This company has both 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch connectors with spring relief.

Aside from actually soldering them on for you, this should get you back onto the soil again.

Oops! The image I showed you is for a mono plug. Please see the MCM listings for the stereo version.

Thanks GD, I'll get on it. And aside from the gripe, once I have the new set balanced out, I don't really care if the knobs fall off. Happens to me all the time.  Grin Angry Grin I just don't want to have to replace components that are faulty out of the gate.
