I have an older Freedom 3 that I need a lower rod for. Anyone have one? Is anything today interchangeable? How about making one? Where would I get parts? I contacted Garrett, but they don't have any.

Lower Rod

Length = 18 5/16"
Outside Dia = 3/4"
Length of flattened area w/hole = 7/8"
Thickness of flattened area w/hole = 7/32" to 1/4"

Tape measure appears off due to the angle of the pictures.

Take the upper rod to a hardware store and find either a thin walled galvanized pipe or an aluminum tube to make a replacement. PVC is just too wobbly for making the entire rod from that material. You can then use either a hardwood dowel shaped to hold the coil or a short section of PVC to terminate the pipe or tubing. Boil some water, stick the end in and then grip it in a vice to flatten it. This will allow you to drill a hole for mounting your coil.

Just do a bit of what we used to call a "desert fix" which won't necessarily be pretty but it will be functional.
