Well i made sure there was no sand or anything left on the coil or shaft. put in new batteries and waited for the rain to stop! Went out this morning to the local beach, and it performed as it always has, (see report in todays finds for details of the hunt...) then i went to a park, at first it did the same thing, crazy random beeping and looooong beeps.  Idiot
so i went away from the play equipment, onto the grass and it calmed down enough for me to find some bits of metal and a couple of coins, then went back to the playground (other end from where i was) and it performed fine. found some more stuff without bother, but then as i got back to where i was right at the start it went whackey again!
So now i'm thinking the playground problem is something similar but different from the sand problem. whether its the steel equipment, or something in the bark mulch they use  i don't know, but there was something localised that caused momentary anomalies!  ( ' you like that? anomalies... {alt} )
Oh, and Paul, i have been experimenting with the discrimination, i wound it right down then up little by little on each signal, i have increased the coin count and you were right, i miss "smaller" signals with discrim'  wound up. and i now know the 'joy' of ring pulls {alt}

jamjars, isn't learning a new machine great fun?   Good thing Paul A is around.  (but just in case, you'll probably find similar learning curves with other machines.  if you do, just follow the same steps/procedures---works more often than not)

You know what?
I'm wondering if it's just outside "interference" that you're picking up from time to time...
Maybe a mast or powerline nearby, something like that.
I know that one beach I found in Cornwall was practically unsearchable... turned out to be interference from an air force base just the other side of the cliffs! (caused by god knows what though!)

Do you want to know the most likely cause of the interference? Ultrasonic alarm systems. It sounds crazy but it's true. The broadcast a fan shaped pattern of high powered ultrasonic pulses to see if anyone is in the zone and when our detectors are there, zappo! We pick up that sound which we can't hear.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I've just joined up and wanted to thank you all for this thread - I picked up a Treasure Ace 100 recently as a first machine.

I'm looking at getting something more recent in the near future but for now this will be fine and I will hand it on to my nephew to see if he's interested in finding treasure  Wink

One quick question - does anyone know if Garrett made a control box cover for this model...?

You can always use a shower cap for that. Easy on, easy off. The free ones from hotel rooms are perfect.
