I can't see any other posts regarding this machine.
i've only had this a couple of months and i'm still trying to understand
the best way to use it. has anyone else had one, or uses one?
got any hints or advice?
It's a very straight forward machine, one control does everything, but i seem to
have trouble with the discrimination, if the target is large, like an aluminium can, then no matter what the setting it will give a positive signal. it is good for depth though, mo problem there.

Cheers,

JJ

Hi JJ,
Good Machine!
I had one and gave it to a relative when I got my minelab.
He still uses it on his local beach and finds some good stuff.
Wouldn't worry too much about not being able to discriminate out things like soda cans.
Most detectors wouldn't being swamped by a signal that size!
Don't use too much discriminate or you'll lose a LOT of good stuff.
Null out ring pulls and the like and you'll lose gold and silver!
Sure, you'll be digging more trash, but your good finds will go up.
Here's a link to the operating manual (if you don't have one that is....)

Hi.
Thanks for that info Paul, it's good to hear from someone who's used one.
It scares me you have put "LOT" in capitals!!  what have i missed?Huh?   Huh?

I've been using it with the discrimination in the ring range hoping to stop the
bottle tops and cans!
thanks for the link, I did get a manual with it though. bought second hand, virtually
unused and still it it's original box with headphones too, NZ$250 which i thought was good
as most decent makes are going for $5-600 second hand.
hopefully it will be a good weekend so i can get back to the beach and find what i missed  Great

cheers,
JJ

Hi,
The problem with gold/silver and aluminium is they all have a similar "signature" as far as the detector is concerned, so by using discrim. that high you don't stand much of a chance of finding jewellery (and some coins too).
I know it's a pain but digging lots of trash brings rewards.
What you might try is to bury a few good (and trash) items in your yard (mark them with golf tees or something).
You can then "practice" and see how much discrimination you can get away with.

well i went down to the beach again, finished work early and it had been a long weekend and good weather so i went to see what had been left behind.
There is a rubbish bin on every path off the beach and 2-3 in the car parks, but do you think people will take their rubbish off the beach?
not bloody likely!!  Idiot

anyway.. i turned back the discrimination as suggested, it seemed to make a difference, i got lots more trash {alt}
but i did have more 'useful' finds. couple of toy cars, $4.50 in usable change, an old coin and cleaned up the beach a little bit. i will be interested who the lower discrim' works when i go to a park.
I think its my imagination but the beep sounds 'louder' when i find a big target like the buried aluminium cans, although other targets all seem to 'sound' the same.

Good Stuff!
You're getting there... No it's not your imagination, the sound well may be "louder" or somewhat "broader".
Stick with it and you'll soon be able to distinquish targets by the different sound "signatures".
 Great

Hmmmmm....  i'm a bit worried, not sure if the machine is playing up, it's been doing funny things.

a couple of days ago i went to a different beach around the peninsular, completely different sand type. its a very coarse sand. what i found was that as i raised and lowered the coil it would beep, if i touched the ground it would beep, as it passed over ridges and hollows in the sand it would beep! to establish if there was a target (and i got 5 bottle tops) i'd have to level out the sand and go over the flattened area to check for a target without the ridges and hollows interfering. i left after 20 mins as the constant beeping and levelling and rechecking wasn't making me cheerful.
Now today i had a few minutes after lunch so went to a playground nearby, but the machine was doing the same thing on dirt and bark mulch, also it was repeatedly beeping and single long beeps with the coil in the air not near anything at all!!

changed the batteries, same thing. went home dismantled the machine so i could check the coil. the reading on the ohm meter stayed constant as i flexed the cord and tapped the coil as i thought the coil or cord were faulty. no corrosion/dirt/sand in the controls, reassembled the thing, checked it again and although not so sever it still does it sporadically, especially on a low discrimination setting. what have i done? has the odd sand done something? is the machine had it? any thoughts anyone?

JJ

Hi JJ,
Have you got a "coil cover" on it?
I ask this because I had a similar problem with a "minelab".
What had happened was that where I'd been using it (beach) water containing magnetic sand etc had got trapped between the coil and cover.
It caused a VERY similar problem.
Drove me nuts until I found it!
I don't use coil covers any more!
If it's not that maybe it could be the coil connector?
Try cleaning it with contact cleaner or similar.
If that fails, shoot an email to Garrett.. they are very helpful.

Hi Paul,
no coil cover, i did wonder if the sand might have been magnetic or something
so i dismantled the unit into all it's pieces and brushed off any sand that was there.
there is no connector, the cord is sealed in the coil and terminates in spring connectors on the PC board.
i might have another go at cleaning anything that might still be on the coil or shaft.
good to know that it might not be a terminal case.

many thanks,
JJ

Hi,
So long ago since I had mine..... (I was sure it had a connector)
Wet salt and magnetic sand, can, and do, create havoc with a lot of detectors, fortunately not permanently!
Also, try yet another set of batteries (been there, done that one, new set of batteries that i'd bought, 2 of them were "duff")  Shocked
