They may have ran on water hot water at that but they still used electricity to power the beast.
( Read the info contained in this pic that was attached to the first post )
12 mile 23,000 volt elec line was strung to the dredge overland from a hydroelect plant.

That is pretty cool. We have one sunk in a canal in the Kewanaw Pennisula of the Upper Penninsula of michigan. Left over from the old copper days.

Back in the 1970's this dredge in Sumpter was pivately owned and they had self-guided tours for 50 cents.  My family and I took the tour and I have pictures of the two kids sitting in one of the huge digging buckets!  Hm-mm-mm!  I'll have to find that and post it here!   Detecting
