Hello All

Here is a ghost town that was the victim of politics.

Kayakoy is a village 8 km south of Fethiye in southwestern Turkey where Anatolian Greek speaking Christians lived until approximately 1923.

The ghost town, now preserved as a museum village, consists of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches which cover a small mountainside and serve as a stopping place for tourists visiting Fethiye and nearby ?l?deniz.

Kayak?y was largely abandoned after a population exchange agreement was signed by the Turkish and Greek governments in 1923.

Its population in 1900 was about 2,000, almost all Greek Christians; however, it is now empty except for tour groups and roadside vendors selling handmade goods and items scavenged from the former village.

An interested place to visit if you are ever in that part of the world.

Enjoyed looking at the pictures - sure doesn't look like they left anything when they relocated. No trees have tried to reclaim the town hillside. Maybe since it's a museum? Certainly are a lot of different reasons behind ghost towns. Sue

Hello Sue

There are so many reasons why towns and city becomes redundant. The scary thing is it is an ongoing process these abandoned cities and towns of today will be archeological sites of tomorrow.

Ongoing is right. Detroit, Michigan was once the most prosperous manufacturing city & the 4th largest in US. Mid 2008, the population was half of what it was in 1950. Today it's a large city with many buildings and too few people. Sue

Some of them legitimately deserve to be protected and stabilized for future generations......others are really beyond saving.   Of those, I can see some being reserved for archaeologists, especially if there were significant people or events associated with the specific location....but the rest should be open to us to other dedicated amateurs who will help ensure the history never gets lost.

Hello All

BA that is a very rational idea with a lot of common sense.

But of course rational ideas will not be tolerated in Archeologists eyes. Some one might make money from it and we cannot have that.

Because there might be questions asked about why tax payers are funding a small select group of people for a fantastic life style.
