Go Up Go Down

This place is called Ophir, Utah and has some residence's still living there and is chuck full of mines everywhere.  My dads friend who recently passed away lived up here and had is own mine from the 1800's in his backyard...it was a complete shaft that he used to go and hang out in.  he went in and got lost for a coule of days and refused to go back in.  anyway here are some pictures, i hope you enjoy them

Hello toleary34

Thanks for the interesting post.

What did they mine there? looking like an interesting place to detect.
Even if there is no gold there you may find some interesting relics.

i think that they mined silver, but I'm not to sure.  my dad would know for sure.  growing up we had a guy from across the street that was old as dirt but had grown up there in a log cabin, and he had tons of stories from working in the mines, trading with the Ute Indians when they came through draggin their teepee's, and from a cave he and a girl found that was chuck full of thousands of crystals in in lengths up to six inches.  I used to think the crystal cave was bull, but my dad said he took that old guy back up there to Ophir before he died and the girl he found the cave with owned the store there in town, and that she still had a bunch of huge crystals from when they had first found it.  very interesting place though

Hello Toleary34

I have posted a bit about this town Ophir in earlier post. The Info I had obtained from a business acquaintance who was from Utah. However after reading your post I think I have been mistaken or misled.

The story he gave me that the town had come under private ownership, and some of the mines where being reworked. Your photos and visit to the place over there would indicated that it is not a closed private town or being being torn down.

Please forgive the error of my earlier posting.

And thanks once again for the interesting photographs.

Hardluck  Huh?

Hey Hardluck.....we're only as good as the info we have (and you have a rep for having good info the majority of the time)...don't sweat it mate.

Either way, Ophir looks like a cool place.

hey hardluck....you know you might be partially right.  there is another ghost town on the otherside of the mountain range called Mercur, and it came under private ownership and some of this area just might be.  there are still some folks living there which is the coolest part about this place because they are very proud of their history and preserving it and have kept the mines in their back yards open and have even left the railroad tracks and mine carts right where they were left.  it's an awesome place and i will take more photos once i get back up that way. here's a couple more pictures...thanks for all of your input everyone

Hello toleary34

I have to confess I am a bit if a ghost town junkie. As you can see with previous posts on ghost towns. If I was out your way it would be like a "kid in a candy shop " for me. Grin

Thank you for the even more interesting Photographs. I am always amazed at the amount of fairly well preserved ghost towns you have across America.  Shocked

In Australia the houses and buildings are either knocked down or taken away. There are very few well preserved ghost towns like what you have in America in Australia.

I find them fascinating exploring the history and relics that all tell a story. And I am sure each of these ghost towns have a good story to tell about their past.

Thanks for the posts and if you got more Ghost towns please keep them coming as I have withdrawal symptoms already. Grin

Hardluck  Wink
