Hello All.

The Ghost Town of Ophir doesn't exist anymore! In the last couple of years, the town was "redesigned" by land owners who destroyed the old homes and put their "new homes" there. Almost all the mines in the area are back in business, and if you have a look at the village, it seems to be a very profitable business. The village has become a small private town where outsiders are not welcome at all. I find it sad that the Americans destroy their last original remains of their heritage.

Look at it this way, the area should still have goodies in it when someone finally gets a chance to search it again.

Thanks for the pictures Hardluck, this is an interesting old town. More and more of these old ghost towns are becoming privately owned with no trespass signs on them. Ophir would have been a fun place to explore before the renovation.

I totally agree with you on the destruction of historic sites as well, I've seen a lot of it here in my town. There used to be an old stone courthouse and police station downtown. It was featured in a movie once. A few years ago it was decided it was too expensive to renovate so a new station was built next door and the old building was torn down and replaced by a water fountain. Last year the new station became too small and the city decided to tear down a historic hotel to build a new one. So far its a gravel parking lot now. I just don't get it.

BA do you suppose there is a whole new generation of people who distrust banks burying jars of coins and nuggets in the back yard? hmmmm  Wink

I don't think it ever stopped......some people have no choice but to avoid banks......and after the past 3 years, a lot more people have no reason to trust either them or the government (regardless of the country).    As for whether instances of such behavior are currently rising---when the populace is actively looking to convert portions of their savings to precious metals, you can be pretty sure that at least some of them are also converting to gemstones, and an even greater portion are trying to keep a "stash of cash" handy----just in case.

Hello all

Idahojones in answer to your question , BA is right people are still planting catches.

stashes can be buried for a number of reason. fear of banks, Tax evasion or proceeds of crime etc..

There is a story going around in 2004 Australia that a drug dealer was killed and his house sold off. A few years later the new owners began to do up the house. In knocking out some walls they discovered piles of money in the wall cavity. 4.5 million dollars in all. Not bad for 450.000 dollar house.

A new roadwork by pass construction in 2006 a grader operator while digging up the field for a new road uncovered a buried trunk full of money. 750.000 dollars. It is not known who planted the cache or where the money came from. Half went to charity and the other half was returned to the finder. The Money was  modern currency.

In 2009 some boys playing next to a river near Sydney discovered thousands of dollars floating in a river.

Here are just a few recent Australian examples and I suspect the United States itself would have much much more hidden deposits.

Hardluck  Wink

Gotta love folks hiding stuff for us curious types Smiley I read a while back some folks had their house remodeled and the construction workers for 100,000$ in coins in the walls. Last I heard the owners and construction guys were counter suing for ownership!  Cheesy

Hello Idahojones

Its a sad to see when money and greed come into the equation. But I suppose it is human nature.

I'm very curious about this activity in Ophir.  I used to own the beer hall, the first permanent building in Ophir that was made of stone.  I'd like to know how to find out more about this.  I did see a study was done in 2004 evaluating the mines in the area.  Anyone have a photo of the beer hall?   I attached a couple of me, one inside and one outside the building.

Steve

Hey, Steve....welcome.   Two things come to mind, 1) you might want to go into our New User Introductions board and post an intro there so people can say hello and get to know you.  and 2) you might want to read some of the posts from toleary32.   He's been doing some exploring in that area and has posted a lot of info recently.
