What is the best way to approach an area or owner that is privately owned? Make a deal to share some of the find , if any?, just hope it is hit and miss?

Get the Address and go to the County Tax assessors office.   They have the Records.

As for permission, Just Ask!

What can they say? NO?

If you offer to weed the place that may be enough.

Yes asking is a good thing, our farmer friend just offered us to look over his other 300 acres that will most likely take a lifetime the way we are hitting things, then again if our  trail keeps on the angle we have been following we will miss most of it and end up in state game lands and that I am not so sure of.

I offered the farmer half of what we found and he said he did not want anything just don't tear it up and let them know when we were on the farm.

I hunt/prospect on private property a lot...and have developed a system, threw trial and error... mostly from error ... as people are not always trustworthy... that works every time and keeps everyone honest... since using this method, I have never had a problem with entering and keeping some of the values found...

I have a single page document that we both sign.... it gives me permission to enter and hunt on there property.. And it spells out the spilt if any values are found, with all expenses of the dig, if any, coming off the top...

Coins are placed in a hat and drawn randomly... Things of antiquity are appraised and sold and split 50/50...

I have found people are MUCH more accepting to allow strangers on their properties if everything is spelled out...

And if they won't let on their property.. go to the next one on your list....

I have a motto:...SOME WILL...SOME WON'T ...NEXT !

Good Luck in all your prospecting anf thunting...

One thing to keep in mine Renegade is don't use the word treasure or treasure hunting that throws property owners off fast. Till them your an amateur historian looking for artifacts or a bottle dump digger.

Well the general public think of treasure hunters as weird eccentric crazy folks living in the past. Even when I am researching in a library archives I sign in as and tell the people there I am a historical researcher, I never use the word treasure hunter.

Go Up Go Down

Well, here In Indiana what I have done since about 1975, is track down who owns the property , or has the say so of it, and ask if i can go metal detecting on it, usually they say OK, I have never been turned down, I am always polite, do not dress like a ragpicker, and drive a neat looking vehicle,  not a rotted ol' junker with trash in it or hanging off, ->make a neat appearance<,they usually point out places of interest, since Indiana is not known to produce TREASURE, have never had a single person even mention it, they wish me luck and say have a good time, I always chat with them, about crops, animals or such things, occasionally they will say, let me know what you find, only had one man ask if I could find him a one cent piece like i just found, never asked for a share of the treasure, many times they will ask if you would look for lost keys or a ring their grandmother lost in 1928,  Yeah Indiana is Pretty good for detectorists not getting hassled, they just worry bout getting their corn or soybeans walked on.
This is  MY  experience here in INDIANA-others may vary
