A visitor has just send me an e-mail asking if I could compile some information on international treasure hunting laws. I think this would be a great idea. Usually when I travel abroard I will take my detector with me so it would be great to know prior what the a specific country's laws on metal detecing / treasure hunting are.

I know for exampe that laws in Turkey are very strict and you are not permitted to take any archeological items out of teh country. Last time I was there I found an old amphore on the beach but couldn't take it with me.  Sad

So if you have any information or know of any good links please kindly let me know and I will be happy to post them.

Thank you for your contributions.

Regards,

Christian

This is a copy from a reply I just did for detecting laws where I included USA   laws and International Laws

Don't hunt on any state or federal land unless you want your detector and car confiscated and you want to spend a few years where others use the detectors on you and your new name is "Baby Bubba".  You will wish you were a drug gangsta cuz they will get treated much better than you will if you appear to detect or have a detector in your car.

If you belong to a club or even pick up a copy of Western & Eastern Treasue or Lost Treasure Magazines you will find the information on what is generally legal, what is not legal and where to find the information that you need so you won't end up in the pokey.  I've even gotten flack on some state beaches during "season".  So be very, very careful.

Here are your links:
You could theoretically be arrested for just having a metal detector sitting in your car in a national park

In the U.S. most antiquities are covered under the Federal Archaeological Resources Protection act , and the Shipwreck bill. However, States are allowed, and do make legal ammendments to the act according to their own laws and requirements.

Use the links for helpful answers.

In the UK, there are a lot of statutary laws, and then individual council byelaws. I have spent the last 2 weeks researching before stepping outside with my detector. I have joined the uk bodies - FID (Federation of Independant Detectorists) and NCMD (National Council of Metal Detectorists). They provide codes of conduct and some guidelines when joining. They will offer more information, if you request it. I have also written to the ports authorities to ascertain where they have jurisdiction and the Crown Estates office. Local councils have given me information on their byelaws that prohibit detecting on council land  Embarrassed but the county councils have given me links to their mapping systems and Finds Liaison Officer details. It seems to vary wildly as to how helpful they are.

I will get the links on here later.

Colin

There are no standard Laws!

Here in the U.S. you are governed by the Antiquities Act of 1906.  Federal Law other then. State Statutes.  State Parks.

BLM Regs.  U.S.  Forest Regs.

Hell Places like Greece, Turkey and others you can spend time in the Clink just for Possession of a detector.

No Way Can You Compile the Info Here.

You Need to check them all out on a case by case bases! Wise

Things change from day to day.
