Many times, they know that somethings there to find, so they block us from finding it....

Yes, they probably want to keep all the pulltabs and bottle caps and the tons of trash that nobody cares to take home after having fun in the woods. Yes, we take with us coins, jewelry, and other good stuff, but we also carry the trash we find, which is a lot!

Yes the politicians are making the rules but they are doing so based on info supplied by the archeologist. historians and special interest groups.

Those special groups are indeed misleading the politicians with flawed arguments that persuade them to take drastic decisions. That is ridiculous.  Angry . Anyways, this summer I'll be detecting beaches and parks in Chicago, and the woods at Rockford, IL. It's time to get out of the Chicago area woods.  Cry

Sometimes I really miss the FDMAC. To all interested parties, the GPAA can help. If any of you are a member, write to them and let them know what's going on.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Usually its just one lil old grumpy person that hates seeing a guy get ahead or have fun. The sheriff visited me one day and I was in the middle of no where. Seems the guy drove by and seen me in the creek. He didnt even own the land. The sheriff and I agreed it was best I go. I dont believe even if you showed him the rules and the laws he would listen. There is so much out there, I dont get too concerned about one spot.

I had a similar situation in which my wife and I were expelled from our own neighborhood's park by a police officer. She thought that park users would be scared of me and my wife digging and swinging strange machines. Yes, I've had the police called a few times, but she was the only one asking me to leave "to do my thing somewhere else." Anyways, it is not really about a particular spot, but about the action of banning our hobby here and there as opposed to a fair regulation. Soon, we won't be able to do it anywhere. I'll miss my honey holes in the woods, but that won't stop me from doing what I love "somewhere else."

Bottom line, though, if we don't individually and collectively do what we can to both protect and promote our hobby, we can't count on anyone else doing it for us....Most of us are good at promoting the hobby to friends and neighbors, now we have to work at protecting it too.

As cold as my next comment may seem, it's the truth.

Complaining here is like screaming into an empty milk carton. Don't waste your time griping here where everyone pretty much agrees with you. Instead, act.

Write a letter. Write 10 of them. Get some friends together to call your representatives. Invite your local member of congress or state representative to see what you find on a typical outing. Be sure to have them note that the trash pile is 20 or more times bigger than any keepers you might find. Remind them that you are doing a public service while enjoying your leisure time. Ask them when it was that they last collected a couple of pounds of sharp, dangerous scrap metal and had fun doing it.

You all know what to say. You live this hobby just like we all do.

Heck, let them use your spare detector (hopefully a compadre so it's not too intimidating) and if they get lucky enough to find silver, remind them that the way a lot of people interpret ARPA, they just broke the law if they stick that 50 year old + coin in their pocket.   And if you can't get your local member of congress, you ought to at least be able to get a state representative or a member of the town council.   If nothing else, ask the guy knocking on your door asking for your vote where they stand on the issue and why....and then educate them politely.

By the way, there is nothing on the questionaire that asks where you are from, so I figure it is open for anyone who might visit Cook County at some point in the future  Smiley
