Lundy Island Treasures.

You know how it goes, someone says treasure and lots of folks show up with shovels and leave holes all over then the conservation crazies make it a park so no one can look. Wait a little longer all the governments will be selling off parks left and right as the monies run out

Unfortunately Heritage conservation orders can be a double edged sword they can be good and they can be bad. Commonsense needs to observed by both ends of the spectrum.

As  a kid belonging to a family that used to dig for sapphires, diamonds, zircon and rubies in alluvial gravels on the weekends on disused farm land. It was fun digging holes, sifting and screening gravel in a vain search to discover the big one. Never found that big one! But hey I still have to this day a Little pile of flawed poor quality gem stones as mementos , all with there own story to tell.

The holes that were dug would soon be filled as the next rains would refill them with gravel. But it didn't matter to us because of fun and thrill looking for gem stones. These fossicking areas where scattered all over the country. It was a chance for the everyday Jo and his family spend some time having picnics, swimming and having fun for free. And chance to perhaps to dream of finding a fortune.

However the powers to be could not bear to see the everyday Jo and his family thinking that one day they might be a winner. And progressively legislated these sites out of existence. This site of old abandoned farmland became an extension of a national park and digging for gems there had become a distant memory.

Some places of course should not be violated and protected. But some areas should be left to us dreamers.

Hello All

Finally on the Topic of Lundy island treasures. there must be a mention of the amount of shipwrecks along the small rocky island. There have been countless wrecks recorded around the area. It can be appreciated that for the many hundreds of years of maritime activity before such records exist, the island was a considerable and effective hazard, and the true number of losses will never be known.

I am beginning to understand why there is was 3 light houses on Lundy 

One treasure ship was the Jenny, lost in the cove halfway up the west side that now bears her name. She was carrying a precious cargo of Ivory and Gold dust, evidence of which still turns up from time to time.

Interesting enough there is Estella Der Mar in 1811 was involved in Piracy in Peru where a large quantity of silver was hijacked from Pisco Peru. Was this treasure lost off Lundy island?

Lundy with its pirate treasures and shipwrecks will always continue to fascinate those who who love the history behind shipwrecks and treasure.

By the look of that list perhaps the light house was run by some pirate wreckers. 

Here is a modern day shipwreck on the island.

There is so much history on this tiny island. The dangerous sea caves still hold some secrets. There is one cave that has 30m high cavern in the back of the cave. over halfway up there is a ledge. What is on this ledge and is behind it is unknown. It is a very dangerous climb inside a sea cave as it is always very wet and slippery. Entry time into this cave is very short at low tide.

Another cave called the Devil lime kiln has the roof fallen in. Here is a picture from distance above.

Wreckers is what I thought when I read the list. When searching old articles I found a lot of ships hit reefs off Lundy. 

Finding a time when the tide is going extreme negative might pay off after a little visit to the ledge.... 

I'm right with you Luc, I could find plenty to keep me busy there
