Go Up Go Down

The story behind this is that it was found in a natural cave in Kentucky.  This is not my find, just something that I cam across on a completely unrelated forum.
Forgot to mention, it was supposedly on the floor, not the walls

Cant tell the size and depth from the pics. Could be molds for pouring mined metals into. Jim

The grooves appear to be mechanically made, re: the length, depth and spacing. The oval in the middle is quite symmetrical. Ed

Hi, the grooves look as if a pully-wheel or block and tackle have been rubbing in, but the small groove ?  yes its more lightly to be a mould .
Can you see any traces of  metal with a magnifying glass?

Hi Evistrike,  unlightly a mould for chisles as the hardend  steel required for this type of tool, I think, would have to be from a foundry.

hi Mark..... just thinking about the stone again. I have a bazaar theory...if you place a `style` (that's an upright) in the centre hole it would make a primitive sun-dial. Look up sun-dial on wickapedia.

Well you are right considering it was found in Kentucky.. I am pretty sure the indigenous people did not have much skill at smelting, I was thinking copper though not steel. I just figured I would throw out a guess since I needed one more post to become a full member..  Grin

Edit:

I did find this interesting article though:

"Old Copper Complex artifacts have been found from Alberta in the west to Quebec in the east in Canada, and as far west as North Dakota, as far east as Delaware and as far south as Kentucky in the United States, but the center of the Old Copper Complex is generally agreed to be in Wisconsin. How did Old Copper Complex artifacts come to be scattered so far afield? The answer to this question is obviously trade. "

For what reason would you place a sundial in a cave?
