Here's my first attempt at making a Google Earth overlay. It is an early 1900's map of Queensland Australia (Note especially the track for the telegraph line).  I am hoping to use this method to discover ghost towns and tracks in the area.

Anyone else using Google Earth? and especially is there anyone who can help me refine this technique?

Note that you must have google earth installed to open the file.

I agree with Homefire they came mighty close.  I made an overlay to use with the real estate mapping system used here, it's a piece of flexible clear plastic with a 4.5" square on it that is divided into 36 smaller squares.  I lay it over the screen with the mapping sys. on and I can see what subsection of the primary section an interesting spot is located in.  The hardest part is getting G.E. to the proper resolution which is with the camera at 100 mi. altitude.

Agreed.  Getting clarity is a problem. Especially in outlaying areas.  Google Earth does not scan them as close I think. They are more concerned with buildings, etc.  Too bad they don't have a mobile for many areas such as they use with google streets.

I like your overlay idea there though. One of the problems I am having with Google Earth is determining distance. Maybe a clear overlay with distance markers could be used???

Great.  I missed that one altogether.  That is an immense help. I knew some of you would have some great answers.

Now to find some more overlays to add to the list.

Super cool idea -- I'd love to learn how to do an overlay -- would you teach me?

I've been using google earth for about a year, but without overlays....just plotting distances and marking hot spots
