I have a 10 year old Garmin hand held GPS unit that seems to work well.
Are the newer units more accurate than the older ones like I have?
I care less for mapping feature.  All I want to do is mark signs with longitude/latitude and then go home and put on
topo maps & aerial photos.

The accuracy is dependent on the number of available satellites and the number of satellites that can cover your area. The features on newer models are easier to use but the accuracy is not really dependent on the machine itself.
