That's a sweet tutorial. Thanks for posting it. Is it yours or from another site?

I often use my paint program (Paintshop Pro) and make the overlay image a 60% .png transparency which allows the thumbtack images, or balloons in the case of Google Maps, to show through. I can enlarge, shrink or rotate the overlay at 60% and see where the best fit is.

The tools we have available to us today would have guys like KVM or Dave Massey drooling right now. Both of those fellows (now sadly gone) did it the hard way. With a topo map and a pencil.

I quit the animations after Flash on the web got easier with server side scripting for PHP and Adobe Flash plugins for all browsers. I use Paint Shop Pro 9. Since Corel bought them out, I haven't updated. I don't really feel the need.

By the way, Google Maps has that hybrid view. I haven't played that much with Google Earth (installed and quickly tested a while ago). Does Google Earth offer the hybrid map/satellite mode?

Just satellite view, you can overlay old map clips on to google earth.
It also gives you very accurate GPS coordinates.
You can put them right in your GPS and go there.
LabradorBob
If you don't use google earth you should,it has a lot of neat options and uses.
I use it every day.

Use caution with Google maps and use a backup. I have found targets up to 4,000 meters off from actual to where Google showed. Yes, there is a build in Dept. of Defense satellite error that varies around 30 meters daily. Quite a few remote area pics on Google Earth are already 6 years old.

Google maps and google earth are different! I took coordinates just out my front door on a hand held GPS,then went to google earth and checked it on there,it is spot on,overlaying the images there is tricky, but will get you real close!

A person can definately find some rather interesting areas to detect while overlaying images like that.

An excellent tutorial. I don't know if/how you can make a screen snap shot but Wikimapia seems to be quite useful. I have no idea how current/accurate it is either. It might be of some use.
