If I am not mistaken Garrett has it's components manufactured over there coils in Brazil and assembles it's products here in Garland Texas. (Made in USA/Texas?)
I gave a pitch on selling them printed circuit boards a few years back and not only was I given the brush off, I was ignored for the rest of the night.
(Lone Star Treasure Meeting)
I do the planning for a printed circuit manufacturing facility in Irving Tex and I thought I would let them in on a little bit of circuit board materials information.
Walked away would not even want to listen to my pitch once they knew just what I was proposing.
Don't get me wrong Garrett has a good product line. I have A pro pointer a 250 and an older 350 crossfire.
The 14 year old 350 was a gift from my wife and the 250 and also the pro pointer I won in competition hunts.
On the hunts I was using a Shadow X3, very fast response and it's light weight make them ideal for fast paced comp hunts.
Of the two Garrett devices the 350 still works and I use it regularly. The 250 conked out and I haven't even bothered having it repaired.
I have taken the liberty of using the ellipse coil from the 250 on my 350 and it works well. Better pin pointing abilities.
I was told they would not interchange....beg your pardon it's working to this day!!!!

So my take on the knockoff,  Garrett went into the outsourcing game with their eyes open and dollar signs in em.
With outsourcing comes an inherent risk of patent infringements.
Ask Troy of the Shadow machine fame he could tell you about infringement. Wise Angry  Violent

BTW:May be that invert device would be good for metal detecting the roof of a mine., if it works Undecided.
The housing looks like one of the styles used back in the 70's.

Sad commentary here but true. I've outsourced some PC board work when the ratio of pricing was 150:1 for prototypes. Yes, seriously. I paid $15.00 for 10 prototype boards from Hong Kong instead of the local guy's price of $2400.00. The local guy did win the production version of the board and the assembly/testing but he wouldn't budge from his prototype fees.

I can understand why they do it. I never told my board house in Hong Kong what the board was for and they never asked. Kept it close to the vest and we never saw a single knock off.
