These are the things I take detecting with me: Might sound quite a lot of stuff but better safe than sorry I say: It all fits quite easy into a 20 litre back pack. I then leave my backpack in the field. I take my Hori-Hori Digging Tool  and my Hip drinks Canister and Mobile phone, Headphones, Towel, gloves, finds pouch with me.  I then detect the field  so I always end up back the end my back pack is after 60 to 90 minutes detecting.

1 x Mobile Phone: In case of emergencies.
1x Headphones: Saves Battery.
1x Garmin Etrex GPS: In case I find a nice place or item to save the exact area of find.
1x Hori-Hori Digging Tool Stainless Steel. Small . Cut neat holes and scoops dirt out.
1x Black Ada Trowel: To dig deeper if needed.
1x Roughneck Lightweight Mini Spade; Again just in case I have to dig deeper.
1x Small hard bristle tooth brush: To clean off dirt and loose debris.
1x Small Magnifying Glass: Eyes not as good as they used to be.
1x Finds Pouch: Obvious enough to keep any finds in.
1x Marker. Marks area of target so you can place detector down and prepare with out loosing the spot.
1x Soil Cover: To place any soil dug out onto & to replace and keep area clean.
1x Swiss Army Knife: Many Uses.
1x Pair of Gloves: Stop hands from getting Cut up
1x Set Wet Wipes. To clean whatever.
1x Small Hand Towel: I tend to sweat quite a bit. Wipe sweat out my eyes.
1x Small First Aid Kit Just in Case. You never Know.
1x Spare Battery Pack: Better safe than sorry.
1x Set Knee Pads: Getting on a bit, Knees need looking after.
1x Flask of Tea: Need Rest Periods.
1x Bait Box: 8 hours + Detecting you get peckish.
1x Hip Canister for cold drink.
1x Lightweight Waterproofs

Depends on where you are going and how far from you car/truck you will be? Most places I hunt are off  the beaten path so a phone is just added weight. Never use gloves. GPS sometimes has a lot to do on where I am headed.
We have several threads here about what we each take try the search feature top right of page and search the entire forum.

WoW!!   That list is a pile more then I do.

When my van is running I just jump in and all is there.

Blankets, BB-Q gear, Fuel, Wood, Aluminum Foil the lot.  Even have Paper Plates, Knifes Forks and stuff.

Beer, Bratwurst, Ice Tea Frozen, Doubles as Ice to keep the other stuff cold.

Spare Batteries come with the detector if using one.

Gold Pan, Sluice, small Pick ax, shovel, at least three 7gl buckets and the Wife.  The Wife is  most important on these adventures.

Only she knows when it's bed time and time to eat.

The 10 year old is good for finding Camp Food ( Shoots Rabbits and Stuff) , Fire wood, and just being a pain in the butt.

He digs good when he wants too.

Dry Washer, spare plug for blower motor, Gas, and a bag of Nuts and Bolts to put it all back together after a few days.

Pocket Knife!   That works if nothing else does!  I Alway have one of those.

It can Feed me, Clothe me, Start a Fire, Fend off the Bad Guys or At least let me pretend too and clean my finger nails.

the only essential (besides the detector, digger, and spare batteries) that goes on absolutely every hunt is more water than I think I'm likely to need.

Around here , you plan on 5 gal per person per day and take 10.

You can live 30 days with out food but only a few hours without water when it's hot.

Aside from my detector, spare batteries, digging stuff, first aid kit and gloves, I normally bring the dog, extra food and water, a blanket and socks. Dry socks are a must when spending a day outside. Hang them to dry over a branch or, if near enough, the door jamb of your car.
