Do the airlines hassel you when you take metal detector on board? I'm planning on taking mine to Ak on the plane (American Airlines), as a carry-on in a small book bag. Any advice, experiences you can would be greatly appreciated. Foiled

Haven't flown American Airlines with my detector, but I haven't had any problems flying inside the US with mine.   I generally travel with mine in my checked baggage, although I have also travelled with the control unit in my carryon and the shafts and coil in checked.

I know we've had a couple of posts on this before (before your time, I think)

Thanks for the reply guys, in order for me to make it even more compact I went to the hardware store and bought a small length of pvc and pvc unions and made my own shaft I just have to drill a few holes to mount the control box and coil it'll fit in a 16" bag now. Foiled

Smart move.....nice thing about 3 part shafts is the break down to nice small packages---but if they're still not small enough (even after you take off the controller and the arm cuff), there is no beating a good homemode shaft.

I flew a couple of years ago from Texas to California. Took my detector as carry on. I wouldn't trust it to checked baggage. I had no problem going either way.

Hello, we made it back from Alaska on thursday I didnt get to do much detecting but I did some panning at Crow Creek mine, Girdwood Ak I found a few 1/8th" nuggets I tried posting pics on here but its just too slow. If you would like to see pics look on my facebook (stacy vance)(Lancaster, Pa) I will be posting more when I get a usb cord for my phone. It was so beautiful there Im looking to buy land and move there! Thanks to those who answered my post about taking metal detector on airline I didnt have a problem at all. I took the control box onboard and put the rest in checked baggage. I also took fishing rods onboard fishing was pretty good too by the way I caught some salmon and trout in the Kenai river along the Sterling Hwy. We hiked up to the Exit Glacier and the Harding ice field near Seward AK. we went as far as Denali, took pictures of Mt. Mckinley It was a great trip and we only saw a fraction of it! Foiled

Glad you had a good time and were able to prove that traveling with your detector really isn't a big deal (at least domestically).
