Alkalines or rechargeables?  What kind of batteries should you be using in your detector?

What two kinds of batteries should you never use?

What do the manufacturers themselves have to say on this topic?

Listen to my latest "In the Treasure Corner" podcast (internet radio show) for the answers.

I never use rechargeables. Weight, mainly. You say you buy alkalines at Dollar Stores at 4/$1. Really? I've never bought anything in those stores. I'd be concerned about quality, expiration date, source, etc on anything that cheap. Sue

Sue, Dollar Tree sells AA alkaline batteries made by Sunbeam; a pack of four for a dollar.  They are fine batteries and have never given me a problem.  And as for expiration date, they move a lot faster there than at Radio Shack.

I actually buy quite a bit of stuff there.  They do have a lot of brand-name things that cost more everywhere else.  Soap, toothpaste, shampoo, for example.  I just bought a bottle of Goo-Gone there that costs two or three times that at Wal-Mart.

You should check one out.  A lot of fun things there for a buck!

Interesting - I'm needing some Goo Gone, myself, & batteries. I'll have to check it out. Can't remember the store I went in - I'll have to see if we have a Dollar Tree here. Thanks! Sue

Let me know what good stuff you found there after you get back.

(No, I do not work for them!)

I think it is a very cheep price for alkaline betteries. As for rechargeables they are more expensive but may be reasonable if you consider 1000x times recharging cycles and if you use them alot. But if you keep a rechargeable battery for too long (a month or so)without using it then you will need to recharge it, unlike alkalines that keep good power level for very long time.

I think you are right Corelius, a rechargeable battery of 2500mAh will give the same or even better performance than a standard alkaline bettery.
