Go Up Go Down

Had a bit of time today to try a few experiments with the 250. Tested on a table to see at which distance the detector picks up a coin face - 8 inches. Then tried with the coins edge facing the coil the distance before a signal was 6 inches.  Then buried a coin at 4 inches to try to find the point on the coil the pinpointer identifies the target.  Using this method then dug up the coin. While in the area had a look for any buried targets. Had one which registered low on the discriminator- turned out to be an old rusty nail. Another at the other end of the scale which was at at 8 inches no matter of this hard clay I dug. Looks like a job for a pneumatic drill!! Does this mean I did not dig deep enough or is there a lesson for my learning here.

G Day Tasher, do you know that some types clay will give off a signal and when you dig it and break it up
it lose's the signal,

Tasher you must do lots of tests and enjoy ya self, I still do testing after all these years
its better than watching the TV when a certain soap comes on,LOL

I'm a lazy bugga, :Smiley did just enough testing to show me that the detector did actually detect metal  Wink then went out and started looking for stuff  Smiley. Probably should do a few tests to see how deep it will pick things up and how far off a coin on its side and flat the thing will notice it but knowing me, that probably will never happen.  Embarrassed  Undecided  Z.

So does clay give false positives?  I am new but have not run into issues like this and TN has plenty of clay.

It all depends on the electrical conductivity of the specific type of clay......you can google it if you're interested.

So the answer was a yes dependent on the type of clay.  The other comment was uncalled for.  THanks

Another thing that will fool you in TN is that some of the old bricks had minerals in them that will give you and indication of silver. I found a half brick last Tuesday that I picked up and moved to get to the signal. All of a sudden it wasn't there anymore! Shocked Ran the coil over the brick and got a strong signal. The pinpointer would not pick it up. Listen to your detector and it will Teach you a lot.
