I have an minelab exterra 505, Is it better to remove the batteries after each use. ( i use it maybe 2 times a week or at least every 2 weeks pending on weather. what is a good time period to let them stay or re move them . If i do not use it more than 2 weeks i remove them. Just didn't want to wear the batt door out or the contacts for the batt.

Hi Hunter12,  I don't see where you should have a problem doing what you're doing now.  I leave mine in most of the Spring, Summer and Fall, using the detector every few week or more.  The only danger with that is forgetting to pull them out over the winter.  But I definitely take them out for the down season.  I don't think your going to have any problem with the door or the contacts it you are gentle in installing batteries or removing them.  Good luck and good hunting!   Detecting

I do remove the batteries of other detectors I have that I don't use regularly.  It is my most used detector that I leave them in.  If I want to use one of the other detectors, I install the batteries when I use it and remove them again when I am done with the hunt.

Be careful when replacing batteries. X-Terras can have the contacts damaged if the batteries are just dropped in (hold it sideways and slide them in gently). I worry about battery leakage and replace the batteries before they get too low to prevent this. I also use Eneloop AA rechargable as they have a very low self-discharge rate compared to other rechargeables. I recharge them before they go dead.
