I have found alot of cool things lying around, but never with the detector. I always catch a glimmer or a flash and look down and there it is. My coolest find was a gold ring with 4 diamonds ( 5th was missing) just lying in the grass looked like something from the 1920s.

Being new to the group I may not carry any weight.

IMHO their are beginner MDs. would say for the $$ the ACE 250, Fisher F2, and even the Tesoro Compadre.  If you want a screen the Compadre is not the one for you. You can always move up and all of these are well under $300.00. I have had the F2 and the Compadre. I liked them both. Good luck to you, Beale.

The X-Terra is a very good all around unit. I have had good luck with mine. I have never ran a F75. I do hear they are deep hitters though, Beale.

Go Up Go Down

I have used a number of brands in the past 30 or more yrs that I have been detecting.
I did very well with the discovery 2200 and the 3300 which is made by BH.
At the time I use a Garretts Ace 250. They are very user friendly when you finally get the hang of the pinpointing.
I recommend that you don't spend too much for one until you get used to the hobby and then upgrade. I have heard of too many detectorists stuffing the machines in the closet due to disappointment because they didn't find great finds at first. It takes practice and patience.
I would recommend the Fisher or Garretts brands that are not too expensive at first. The most expensive detector I have bought is a $300 one.  Remember that the more you pay, the longer it's going to take to pay for itself.
 Just my 2 cents worth.
 Arturo
