As a begginer, I have narrowed my chice down to either the Tesoro Cibola or the Bounty Hunter Landstar. I am interested in hearing what owners have to say about each. Or maybe a recommendation on another model. Thank You.

Tesoro Cibola or the Bounty Hunter Landstar.

Welcome from Galveston Island papajoe

I got a Landstar in a trade last year and have used it a lot. I like it on the beach.
Never used the Cibola  but hear good things.
Have you looked at the Garrett Groundhog

Of your 2  picks, I would suggest the Tesoro, have had Tesoros in the past and they are the more rugged/dependable of the two, as I hunt pretty rough, everywhere, and a lot, always have, and few detectors will keep up with my style without repairs or just falling apart, for light occasional hunting, either would do, but for the long run and getting  SERIOUS, I just gotta say, MY choice would be the TESORO, mebbe some won't agree, but that is my opinion Wise

Thanks for the input everyone. I am leaning towards the Tesoro Vaquero, does anyone have and use one? what are advantages over the Cibola? I will have to check out the Garrette Groundhog. I must say my New Years resolution is to buy American made when ever possable. Can't wait till spring!!!!! PAPAJOE

Well I wish I could help you, I have a Bounty Hunter and a good friend that has the Tesoro. I just bought the Bounty Hunter and with a foot of snow and temperatures in minus digits haven't have a chance to use it.

The vaquero has a manual ground balance adjustment.

If you are new to the hobby, go for the Cibola.

Manual GB, once tuned correctly, will not provide more than an inch more in depth in difficult soils.

The difference in price can be used to buy a second coil. a DD one, for instance.

I have a Vaquero with a ten turn pot..Great machine, Deep, fast response. Very light, almost non tiring to use...I use the 5.75 coil in yard hunting. The 8 by 9 coil in the fields, and a 18 by 3 inch Clean sweep for the very large lawns. One is 35 acres..The Cibola is an excellent machine and I am planning on buying a used one and having it outfitted with a ten turn GB . Will go DEEPER than my Vaquero with better iron rejection. Get the Cibola, money you save a Garrett pro pointer probe, then have Sven or someone put the ten turn pot in and then Ground Sweeper time ...The amount of finds is not proportional to the time you spend searching, but the amount of ground covered..A G/S coil is at least twice as fast as the 5.75 coil, if not more(I have to do a test)..You need Ground balance to get full use out of the ground sweeper coil.. Good luck, hope I didn't confuse you. cordially Nad        Detecting

I have used the Cibola and owned two of them and I can tell you that the only reason I got rid of mine was that I like a meter on a unit....The choice between a Tesoro Cibola or a LandStar is an easy one to me....Definitely the Tesoro is the easiest to use and will give you less problems while hunting. A fellow I know has a LandStar and he says it won't work at all unless you use Alkaline batteries and it is useless to try to use rechargeable batteries in it. He isn't a very experienced detectorist and his mostly sits in a closet or whatever. I can tell you that the frequency of a Cibola makes it hot on brass, nickels, or gold items. It'll reach down over a foot deep for a nickel or gold ring...but it is not as deep-searching for say a dime or a penny as it is for the nickels or gold items.

I have never used a Cibola. But I do Have a BH Landstar which I use. I'm biased to metal detectors with different Tones for Target ID.
I find the Landstar very easy to use.
It is very accurate for coins and silver rings. I bought it specifically for fast recovery of clads and silver rings in parks and sports fields, and the first summer I was able to recover 12 silver rings.
I'm so used to the 3 tone ID that I could not use a detector without this feature.

It is not as rugged as the Cibola, but you can get a used BH for a very good price.
Ken
