yup gloves are a must,ya never know whats in that whole yer digging,could be glass,rusty metal,even needles,ya don't need to get any infections.just about any pair will do.i got a pair a bright yellow lambskin ones from a hardware stoere(menards)for about 8 bucks.the reason i went with yellow is if ya drop them in a field they'll be easy to spot(a leason well learned)

the leather gloves like bomber is referring to are great.  Another good choice is mechanics gloves---there lighter and less bulky, which is a big plus for some people.   Look around and you should be able to get a pair of those relatively inexpensively.   Even gardening gloves are better than nothing, but if you go that route, you should get a pair that is rubber coated (one more layer of protection between you and anything nasty).
