Go Up Go Down

I've been in this hobby for decades and never thought about this until someone asked me the the other day.  Pull tabs are aluminum.  Will scrap yards buy them if they are bagged together?  I have a screen that I use to clean the dirt off of non-valuable relics.  I could dump the tabs on the screen and then use a hose with nozzle to blast the dirt off.  Let 'em dry in the sun and bag 'em.  I know it would take a bunch to be worth selling but then I've literally dug thousands of the things and find more every time I go out because I don't set my discrimination that high.  I gotta say that I'm going to feel a little dumb if I could have sold them.   Sad

John
Okay, I did an internet search and now know that tabs can be sold.  Probably should have done that in the first place.  Well, at least the darned things have some value.  I wonder how many pounds of them I've thrown in the trash over the years?  To me they were just a nuisance and an irritation.  LOL!

John

John, glad you brought that up because most of us have probably been throwing them away rather than saving and selling them....imagine how much a 5 gallon bucket of pull tabs would weigh  Smiley

You can bet that the tabs will go into the keeper side of my apron from now on.  Same goes for those crushed or shredded aluminum cans.  The only excuse I can offer in my defense is that back when I started aluminum had very little value and you had to find a salvage yard to buy it.  I just threw the stuff away.  Times have changed when it comes to the value of metals.

We keep the ones from around the house and donate them to the Ronald McDonald House, not sure why they collect them. The ones I dig get trashed guess I need to rethink this.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has been throwing money away.  What I read is that because the tabs are thicker than the metal in the can, you can pack more of them into a given container weight-wise.  In other words, a five-gallon bucket filled with tabs will be worth more than the same bucket filled with crushed cans.  Makes sense now that I think of it.

From Homefires link

A gallon of tabs is about 3,400-4,700 tabs (different-sized tabs, and the matter of the little curly thing which tangles all the tabs together and can affect volume by up to 36%), so a gallon should weigh in close to 2.65 pounds.

Which means a five gallon bucket ought to bring in between 7 and 8 dollars around here (possibly as high as 9 on a good day).

Keep 'em and eventually make a little money or throw 'em away and make nothing?  I'll flush the dirt off and keep 'em.
