I just got my first decent detector today.

I am still looking over the manual and getting a feel for what "works".

Start out with the pre-programmed modes (if it has them). I have a DFX, and that is what I did, found stuff my first 3 times out! I have also looked on the web and programmed some custom search programs to try out as well. I am still new at this as well, but the best advice I can give you is to dig just about every target until you start getting used to what they sound like, and look like (if you have a screen). Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the advice...today I found a lot of soda cans/tabs however I did find a US quarter (2005), a fishing lure, an old pocket knife with the blade totally gone haha...but practice makes perfect I guess either way it is still fun and you never know what you are going to find.

cruefan, if you found anything other than a lot of soda cans/tabs on your first couple of tries, you're doing pretty good.  Keep doing what you're doing and follow K5EXX's advice....that's the sure way to master your detector.

welcome.....what i did to start getting used to my detector was, i went to the fairgrounds and searched under the bleachers (not to close to avoid the metal if the bleachers are made of metal) and while i was searching there i found out what pull tabs, iron, and other metals sounded and looked like.  i dug them up to put into memory what each sounded like, and then headed over to the little booth where they sell all the tickets.  i figured that it would be a coin rich environment and i was right.  i used the metal i didn't want to find to discriminate my detector away from picking up that metal.  well, the rest of the day was finding all coins, and being able to distinguish the difference between the type of coins (through hearing).  This little self training technique helped me out a lot.... i gave myself an environment to find what i didn't want to find....as well as an environment that was rich in coins. helped me out a lot, let me know how your future endeavors go...and good luck

Go Up Go Down

when i first started i found that if you get some known objects and pass them under coil
it will help in the field.find a silver quarter,a regular coins, a gold ring, a silver ring and
learn the different sounds and meter locations. that will give you a better understanding
of your machine.
