when you mail it, you have to declare it and it's value. The package is subject to inspection and import fees not withstanding the costs of shipment. For a md that costs $1200 and has an import tax of 19.7% plus shipping.......well, you can see it is very costly..

You have to fill out a customs declaration on the plain doing the same thing.     No difference.

that's true (on the 'plane') but when you declare it, you can call it 'used' and assign a "used value" to it and there is, I believe, an amount that does not require a payment of taxes. When it is bought directly from the dealership/retailer, it is 'new' value.

This all may be academic as I will probably order directly from a dealer and pay the fees since the uncertainty and the hassle may not be worth the effort.... Coloma Gold

Whites makes an excellent hard case that I used when I fly. Never had an issue with TSA.

Thanks,  I may consider that in the future (perhaps a Christmas present?). Coloma Gold

Hello,
I am from France and also for many years I used to carry my metal detector in my handbag with no problem. But since 9/11 things have changed. The cane could be considered as a weapon! So wrap everything with your underwears and here it goes with your checked baggage. As for custom never had any problem as it is your personnal propertie.Internationals airlines and TSA require that you do not lock your suitcase. So use a strong strap and pray that it will not open. But do not wary just came back from Florida with no problem. Grin
I rather to give you a direct answer than to direct you to others posts that might confuse you.You can always contact me by mp if you want any further information.
