I want to buy another metal detector while visiting my son in Michigan and bring it back with me to France.. Has anyone experienced problems with carrying a md (in a box) as personal property on board a plane between countries??? I will be marking the box with my name and identifying it as  a 'used' md in order to avoid import tax ( I will actually use it in Michigan so that this will be a true statement).  Any comments? thanks, Coloma Gold

Don't see a problem with the Air Lines other then the Usual Rough Handling.

Never Under estimate Customs any place.

I'm thinking there going to be looking for Duties Paid.

Packaging it up in a box....? Flying with my detector they (security) want to inspec it. They ALWAYS ask me to take it out of whtever I have it packaged in. Just saying...keep this in mind when you package. Make it easy to inspec.... and the faster you will get though security. Myself, I dis-assemble mine and pack it in my normal luggage which also allows for cushioning and protection of the detector. I carry mine on board with me in my carry-on.

That would back up your claim as a used detector as well. Cool

No I have not tryed carrying it between countrys yet...just the states. Just saying that if they want to inspect it, package it easy for them and you. If your not going to carry it on, than I would'nt think there'd be a problem checking it. If your checking your luggage, I'd still package it in with your clothes to protect the detector. Of course...don't go telling them "cache said..."  Grin

Coloma Gold, it might ease your mind some to read a few of our previous discussions about travelling with a metal detector.   The thread I am attached DOES include talk about travel between countries.

Hi Coloma.  I have taken my detector to Mexico a couple of times and had no problems at all.  I took it as a carry on once, and packed it in my luggage another time.  All this was after 9/11 with the enhanced security. No problems.   Different country might have different deals...  !

I have also made several flights to Hawaii (various islands) with metal detectors as carry-ons with absolutely no problems.

Why not mail it a head of getting there. And. Not worry about taking it on the plane?
