Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone. I'm new to the hobby and have been aquiring equipment to hunt this spring. I've read and heard about coil covers. How important are they and should I invest in them. The coils (Garrett)say they are "Rhino tough"...but are they? Got lot's more questions, but one at a time! Smiley
I'd love to hear from you all with experience.
Thanks!

I think coil covers are great!

People under estimate how abrasive sand on a beach can be.

The cover only cost a few dollars and can prevent holes and dings in you coil.

OK= coil covers= WELLL= allright some fit tight on your coil, some loose, some are very tough plastic, some not, depending on wht you want, some people seal them on with some type of adhesive, and usually they are tough to remove, advantages, they keep your coil looking new , so when you trade detectors , you can get top dollar, they protect the coil from damage from scrapes and rocks, MOST COILS ARE VERY TOUGH AND EPOXY FILLED THO, disadvantages, unless you seal it with some kind of adhesive as I just mentioned, you stand a CHANCE of getting dirt, and sand particles between the coil and cover, magnetic or black sand will cause false signals, and the coil cover has to be removed to clean it out, Myself=I never use a coil cover, I'm just a Little careful and try not to bang it around too much, usually i just keep the coil coated with a very heavy coat of auto paste wax, or a type of scuff cote shoe polish, works good, and  it's cheap, protects good unless you really get to banging around. good luck and happy hunting Wise

Thanks for the input. Think I'll try this year w/o covers, mostly plan on MD in fields, but not ruling out the local beaches!

Exactly what Bugar said!
My Minelab Explorer was driving me nuts until I took the coil cover off.
You'd be surprised what gets in there!
A little moisture and mineralised dirt trapped in there is enough to send a highly sensitive machine like the Minelabs crazy!

Hi capnrich,  Waveing Waveing
It's really a matter of personal choice.  Wise
The coil covers help to protect a coil from minor damage,
at the price you can't really go wrong with puttin' one on.  Great
They do need to be taken off frequently and cleaned inside.  Mad Mad
The alternative as Bugar says,
ya just got to be careful ya don't bump n scratch it.

BE WARY !  Shocked

Rhino coils without coil covers are NOT covered by the warranty and are VERY fragile.

The first part of this sentence applies for Belgium and France .

The last part is alas very true.
