Reading some info on coil cleaning when using a coil cover....

Has anyone used silicone caulking on coils to seal the area between the coil and the coil cover (snap on type coil cover from White's)?. Is there anything obviously flawed with this thought. Is there a problem with using the silicon based caulk? Coloma Gold

Just ordered two coil covers and I also would like to get an answer to this as I have read many horror stories concerning cover removal for cleaning. Some say they sand the inside of the cover. Some use a toothpaste coating, while others use spray silicone and others silicone paste. Others just seal the lip of the cover with RTV silicone. And worst of all, some state that none of this works and they end up cutting them off. I know this is the internet but someone has to have a definitive answer.

Laugh if you want but it works!

Just smear some Crest tooth past over the seam of the Cover and your coil.

It dries out and keeps the foreign stuff out.

When you want to remove the Cover you just poor some hot water over it and it comes right off.  LOL!

I learned to fill nail holes in walls in Base houses this way. LOL

Funny how when you have been in the Military doing so much with so little you learn to do almost anything with nothing!  LOL

Homefire,

You didn't mention the most important part,   with or without floride? Teach   Funny... Thanks for the tip... In the service we used it to clean the brass on the drains and drain covers as well as the grout on the tile showers... You're right, odd uses but they work.Coloma Gold

Does it have to be Crest?  Does it have to be a paste or can you use a gel type?  Just asking, but seriously.  I haven't had that much trouble over the years with my coil covers..  On my Compass X-70 which I bought in the mid-80's I just snapped the coil cover on.  When I have cleaned it, it has had very little foreign material in it.  Just a little bit of dust and dirt and a tiny amount of black sand and the like.  But I do like the idea of sealing the cover.
