Are coil covers worth it, I don't quite understand the idea behind them?

Basically there to stop damage to your coil.
Sand and dirt can be very abrasive.
I've taken them off my Minelab Explorer II because they can trap mineralised dirt and moisture in there, which as Minelab owners know, can cause the detector to go nuts!
Now I use a little "Armor All" on the coils instead (and I'm a bit more careful!)

As Paul said they will protect your coil from damage / wear. As they are way cheaper than replacing a damagec coil I would recommend using them.

woodwizard;
I just ordered my first detector Friday and went the extra bucks for the coil cover.  I believe you when you say you can't see the joint because I can't.  I don't think my cover looks like yours yet my coils are open between loops like yours.  I'd be interested in sealing mine as well but have never used the liquid tape.  Does it come off pretty easy? any other tips about using it would be appreciated.  Seems like a good idea. I wonder if it would void the warranty on my detector.

I just spugde rubber cement over the gap.   The Cover can be removed as normal and the rubber cement can be rubbed off with your fingers.

Keeps out the sand and water.

Works for me!   Cool
