Howdy
A few things would help as of what type of detector you may be using and what type of relic hunting you may be doing? On the average a larger sized loop like a 12" is most common in relic hunting. However there are times in trashy areas you might be better off with a smaller coil to work in amongst the trash. Operator skill and a good detector with a assortment of different size loops can make a very good payday while relic hunting.
Many factores have to be taken into account. Many different sites may require different applications and knowing on what you are searching for such as searching for civil war cannon balls you would probably need a larger loop size beyond the 12". Such as relic hunting on the Oregon Trail, some of the camp sites are loaded with iron around the fire pits and wagon repair was on going, so lots of nuts, bolts and wire seemed to be a staple and necessity. There is where a standard 8" loop or smaller comes into play. I even have a 100 KHZ (TR) unit when I get thick of the iron that helps and ignores allot of the smaller iron and it will still find smaller non-iron objects.
Hope this helps
