My latest podcast (internet radio show) tells you how to answer those idiot friends of yours who make fun of you because you waste your time digging up pennies in an age where the minimum wage will soon be over $7.00 an hour.

I guess we are pretty lucky over here (and in Europe)
One good beep and you could be set up for life!
The next one could be like the ?500,000 celtic gold coin hoard from a few months back,Viking torc, Roman etc etc.............

I am an european (continental) beach hunter.

Hunting for modern losses.

As I always say, we are lucky here with the euro coins.

I have always wondered, reading a lot of US forums, why on earth they never get halves and dollar coins. Are they saved up?

I too wouldn't be happy digging loads of 1 eurocent coins.

But after all, it is a hobby, isn't it ?

HH

Funny you should say that. over my way , the most coins I seem to find are $1 & $2 coins and sometimes very large copper pennies they did away with the 1 & 2 cent copper  coins years ago so I dont find many of them , and hardly any 5&10 cent nickel coins.
The $1 & $2 coins are alluminium bronze and they go close to the pulltabs so you cant discriminate pulltabs or you miss-out on the $ coins as well ,  so its tricky and frustrating .
I come to the conclusion that I have to dig everything if I dont want to miss anything .  With the ETrac goes down 12 inches so now Ive got to take a small shovel with me and dig a well to retrieve my find  Laughing

Half-dollar and dollar coins are seldom found in the US because nobody uses them.  I haven't seen either coin in use since the 1960's.  We carry pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in our pockets, but never halves or dollar coins.

I don't know why the larger coins went out of use, perhaps because they are bulky and heavy?

The other reason they are seldom found is that they are large and bright silver in color, so if someone dropped one it was pretty sure that someone else would see it and pick it up before it ever had a chance to sink into the ground.

Well, I must frankyl say that the Eurocents and its pre-sucessor (Deutsche Mark & Pfennige) can be a pain in the ass when hunting with a PI machine in German lakes. That's why I switched to a CZ-20 VLF machine when hunting in lakes and rivers.

Regards,

Christian
