I wish you luck! Look for post hole banks, and anything that stands out over time, like huge trees (or the stumps of huge trees), Rocks, and make sure to go over the garden (alot of people hid stuff there, because a fresh dig wasnt out of place) and the area outside the bedroom window (it was nice to see your $$$ was safe if you heard something at night, just look out your window)

Unmarked family graves are common in Indiana, often the headstone was made of wood and wiped out by weather, or in some cases, the grave was never marked.

Overhill, another possibility to consider is that it could be an Indian burial mound of some sort, which might be of interest to local archaeologists.  If you find an open minded archaeologist like Duchess to look into it.  Anyway, good luck and keep us posted, please!   Detecting   Wise

I had old Cherokee graves like that on my property. I just left them alone.

You also want to check a building's height away from the bedroom window of the house. They would bury stuff just that far away in case there was a fire and the wall collapsed. Or so I've been told  Wink

Could this perhaps be an old Indian Mound that was made well before the "Native Americans" forced the original inhabitants out of the area?  There have been several found in my area of the country (western PA down thru TN).  Not all of them were large.  Some were very small and contained pottery shards and trinkets.  No on knows for certain what they were for.  Good luck and post up if you find anything..

Hi Overhill'
even as this 1 is an old question, I might have an answer.
I found something very much as you describe. Was out in
the forest, perhaps 20 acre area surrounded by stone walls.
I really was curoius as to what it caused this mound. After
a bit or research, I found out it was simply a pile of stumps
and rocks put there when the field was cleared, but the
area has since grown over.
