How far above the surface is your coil head?  And did you re-scan the area AFTER you removed the surface trash?

You should operate with maximum sensitivity unless there is some reason not to do so. Some symptoms of over sensitivity are false targets near larger ones, fluttering tones when scanning an area you know to be free of metal or the inability to detect two targets as separate when they are clearly far enough apart to do so.

Your problem is what is known as receiver swamping or the target being just so close to the coil that the machine cannot analyze it. So, it takes a guess that it may be a full aluminum can at 6 inches rather than a bottle cap or pull tab at the surface. Detectors are fantastic machines overall but they are not perfect. They do make mistakes in analysis. Thus, you will be advised by nearly everyone here to dig every target as if it is a potential treasure. Those here with the best recovery rates are the ones who dig each and every target.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
