Go Up Go Down

G'Day there people of Knowledge I need your help.

I need a small metal detector that will pinpoint nails or more to the point nail heads hidden in wood.

I have some nice old timber that may have old nails in it and I would really like to know before I run it through my table saw.

As the timber will only be narrow and not that deep, say 150mm at most, the search coil would not need to be large either (yes I am guessing here as well).

Any infor on a DIY progect that is complete with PCB schematic and parts list would be really appreciated.

This was what I was suppose to be looking for, however I got side tracked and after look around I would now also make a full size one as well.
Now I just need to work out which one. Wink

Thank you for your time and effort, it's much appreciated.  Smiley

Regards
Graeme.

Here are a few varying in price from under $20.00 to about $42.00. All hand held and very sensitive. Note that the second one on the list is a Garrett hand scanner used by security people. That one is capable of finding tiny bits of metal in foods. Should be perfect for your application.

Read the descriptions carefully. The prices are all postpaid and you will pay much less than building your own. Delivery takes about 2 weeks to Perth so you'll probably see similar results. You can pay for faster shipping.

Hay GD thanks mate for going to all that trouble of find all those links I do appreciate it, your all right hay.  Clapp

As I was looking at each one I noticed the the Operating Frequency changed between some of them.
Can you tell me what difference this makes?
I have a vague idea it has something to do with the strength of the detector and the material it will detect, am I even close :Smiley
This one was about what I had in mind

I have alot of time on my hands and I like building stuff and electronics really does interest me, infact it was this little project that brought me here.  Wink
I also like the idea that I have some control over the quality of the parts and can also influence the strength of the unit.
So if you have any sugestions on a unit like this that I can sink my teeth into Tha would be sweet. Wink

The cost will be significantly higher to  build your own. The plans that are here on this site and others are way too much detector for what you want to do and will cost you a minimum of $200.00 per unit. It never has been "cheaper" to DIY when it comes to this sort of thing. For a $20.00 investment, you have nothing to lose really.

The 20kz frequency is good for iron. Those small hand held units were made for security to pick up keys, coins and etc.
