Between this thread and pgill's thread on the rate of sinkage, it should be clear to all of you thinking detectorist out there that there is NO iron clad rule of thumb to determine how much a coin will sink in a given period of time.   So if someone tells you a coin will sink about one inch every 5 years, that's hog-wash.  It might apply to the area he/she hunts under normal conditions for that area, but it won't apply somewhere else with different environmental (soil, weather, traffic, etc) conditions.

However, the fact that there can be no iron clad rule of thumb doesn't negate the value of the experiments.   The more you know about what to expect in a given situation, the more likely you are to be successful.

BA,  Yes differant areas will have differant results so we need to apply the findings of each area to that area.
and have tried this before only I forgot it until you bought it up,  Weldone

No permafrost here in Oregon, but the ground freezes, buckle, rises, thaws, sinks and objects in it move up and down.  In soft , looser ground coins and other objects seem to sink deeper than in hard ground, but when it freezes some objects seem to get pushed up, even to the surface.

Thats right Alfieboy its all down to how hard the ground is and and when the rain comes it softens the ground and when
it freezes things rise and when it gets hard from the sun they stay where they are,

All of the methods in the original post require huge amounts of energy to accomplish. You don't get liquification except during an earthquake. The heat energy in freezing and unfreezing is enormous. Yes, these can cause movement in an upward direction but most artifacts become locked in a layer once erosion begins to cover them beyond a certain depth.

You didn't start an argument, mate, just more discussion. Discussion on both sides of the issue is the way we all learn. On your own, you can only learn just so much.

AU, Oli said he wasn't trying to start an argument. I was consoling him and telling him that discussion is not an argument. What he is doing is discussing the issue. No harm, no foul.

I like your new avatar, AU. It suits you. Maybe if he was holding a Union Jack?
