Go Up Go Down

Hi guys,

I open a new topic to reply to the "sinking" topic,

http://www.thunting.com/smf/metal_detecting_in_general/why_does_relics_and_coins_sink_in_the_ground-t22224.0.html

A french MD magazine wrote a full article about the way that objets could "go up" in the ground and finish to surface, and they explain with a few experiences:

- shaking statification : take a mix of sugar and glass balls. Shake it : sugar goes down, glass balls are upside.
It could represent sand/fine groung and rocks.

- dilation stratification:
Take a box half filled with a mix of wet sand and clay. Put some coins on it. Finish to fill the box with the same mix. Put it in the freezer. Let it warm. repeat freezer/ warm many times: coins which were first horizontal begin to erect.
This could explain the "crawling of grounds".

- Structure of the masses of fallen rocks: mix brown sugar (big grains) and fine white sugar. Make a window with two plexi pieces and three wood pieces. Pour the mix of sugar in one of the corner : grains get separate according to their size.

I'm not trying to create a conflict with the other topic nor the authors, i'm just trying to bring some reflexion about different phenomena; aka different viscosity according to the degree of humidity of the ground, Archimedus push (don't really know it's english name.. sorry if i'm wrong), etc

Hope this could help,

Oli

Those are interesting effects and good to remember. Artifacts are also exposed by erosion, basically the overburden is washed away until the artifact is at the surface.

Perma frost always pushes things to the surface, in a town in Rissia they have to re Bury their dead because
every 5 or 10 years the coffins come back up to the surface, and this town is the coldist town on earth.
in the rest of the world as you climb higher the temp gets colder, in this town as you go up it gets warmer
This town holds the record  at -71,6? and that is without a wind chill, Look up Oymyarkon? thats if i spelt it right.

 OH ok I found ya
For a controlled experiment these a pretty neat plus you could actually see what the coins are doing underground.
I think Peters experiment is about how a coin would react to sinkage out in mother nature with all the weather elements, insects, underground critters, growing grass and what ever else happens to the ground at the coin site that is exposed to the outdoors.
Myself,I'm curious of how long it will take for the coins to disappear from sight on top side.
Thanks oli for the post.....  Great

Erosion and Deposition will explain most all the movements of objects on or under ground, not a lot or magic here.

Nobody said a thing about magic. These guys are trying to understand why and how coins etc move in the ground.
