I just bought a Garrett Ace 250 off ebay, I havent got it yet but cant wait to. This is the first metal Ive owned. Does anyone have any advice for a beginning metal detectorist? Did I make a good choice for a detector? Maybe soon I can be posting some good finds.
Thanks

The Ace you chose is a good unit.  You did quite well with this choice as it is a good unit for beginners as well as experienced detectorists.  A good place to start often times is in your own yard...you never know what you may find.  It gives you the chance to get used to the machine and to practice digging holes and filling your holes in so as to not leave any signs of being there.  Read your owners manual carefully and take your time.  Watch the video that comes with it as long as it comes with one.  Alot of times this will cover features and how to pinpoint with your machine. After awhile in your own yeard if you feel you're doing find with it then by all means start exploring with it.  I hope to see some pics or posts of finds and if you have any questions feel free to ask.  Lots of friendly and helpful people here.  Another big tip is just to relax and have fun with it.  Hope you enjoy many nice finds and hours of entertainment with your new Ace.

HH

First of all good luck and happy hunting!

I think you made a good choice. I would recommend to find some test items and practice with them out in your backyard at first. This will help you get a feeling towards your machine and learn its reaction to different targets. Best get some coins as well as junk items. This way you can also practice using your discriminator at its various settings. Don't set it too high at first or you may loose good signals as well.

Please keep us posted about your finds!

Thanks for the advice guys. I just got the detector in the mail yesterday, but I also got a fresh 3-4'' coat of snow, so it might be a couple days. Ive already read the owners manual, treasure hunting book, and watched the video that came with it. Now if this dang snow would only melt.

the 250 is a good machine and not to expensive so if after a while you were to decide this wonderful hobby is not for you then if you re-sell your machine you will not loose out to much. Far to many come in to this hobby thinking if they buy the biggest and best then they will find the most unfortunately it does not work like that.

Take your time read your manual practise with the machine join a club if you have one locally, then if you enjoy the hobby you can upgrade as you grow in to the hobby, it is a fantastic machine to start with and it will be a good back up machine later on.

Happy hunting. Detecting

Hi WVHillbilly,   Welcome

Hey the Ace 250 is a great wee machine.   Detecting Detecting Detecting
Lightweight, only 4 aa batteries, fun to use, simple controls.   Great Great Great
Gives some machines costing twice or three time as much
a good run for the money.

As with all MD's the more you use it the better you'll get.   Rider Rider Rider
To many newbies are not prepared to put in a lot of practice.   Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

Best tip I can give; The 3 Ps - Practice, Patience, n Persistence. (lots n lots)
Stick with it and the Ace will reward you handsomely.

Some i just locked on from Charles Garrett, is  you need 100 hours to learn any detector, whatever kind, the 250 is a real good outfit.
Another thing, don't ever try to out-detect a person that just has one detector they have had a good while +they will know how to use it+
Few years back was detecting with friends, we all had more than one detector and kept switching back and forth=except ONE guy= He had a ratty ol' detector he'd been using for bout 10 yr, his only one, all we could hear was his armrest clanging back and forth, it was so worn out and loose= WELL  he out detected everyone else about 4 to one, made a good lesson for us and our fancy, switch and swap detectors, gotta know how to use what ya got  Detecting

There's a learning curve you have to go through. Esp for the beginners who think who think they know it all. The only way to learn is go out in the field and through trial and error- become more proficient. It takes time.
