I have heard if you really clean a coin with soap and water..then make sure it's really dry..putting it in olive oil will slowly remove crud from copper coins..you have to take the coin out every couple of days to wipe it down again.
I have never used this method  but I have seen it on several threads.

i'll tell you one of my favorite methods for cleaning..
take a toothbrush and pour some motor/luricating/whatever type oil~olive maybe, rub the coin between your fingers for a while with it till the crap starts coming off/take as much off as you feel comfy-then hit it with the toothbrush enough to take off as much as you like.
maybe dry it once in a while to see how much you've taken off so you can leave some original pattina.
there are lots of ways to skin a cat.try that out on somethin you dont really give a crap about..practice makes perfect! Grin

Extra virgin olive oil is the best.

Tried olive oil on a few things. It does loosen up some curd if you leave it in there for a week or two. I  have never read any bad things about it's use, so giving it a try might be safe. Remember that it is advised that any item of value should not be cleaned.
