Whites GoldMaster II, Fisher Gold Bug II, Minelab Explorer II and Tesoro Treasure Mate

Go Up Go Down

I rarely have one of something just for the fact that I like to introduce my friends and family to new new things. I don't have any friends that metal detect, but many want to go with. I don't expect them to drop a few hundred dollars to go with on one trip and not like it , so I would like to get a second detector. I already have a second for gold nuggets.

Some requirements:

1) I do not want to spend a kidney on a piece of equipment that may or may not get abused. I probably won't use it more than one time for myself so... you get the point.

2) I hunt many different areas. I want a detector that is just as "at home" with a tot-lot as out in the middle of nowhere on some old homestead.

3) My friends do not want to hear me explain ground balancing, threshold, discrimination, pinpoint, and the various other adjustments we learn to love. A simple disc., sens., and thresh.  would be just fine.

4) Customer service from the company is always important.

5) A name I can trust (Garret, Fisher, Whites, Minelab, Tesoro)

That is what I am looking for. I know I am picky, but let's hear what you fine folks recommend.

One other question: Do you find it easier for newbies to use audio only, or should I look for something with a visual display?

Thanks

Sean

i bought a cheapy chinese machine a couple of years ago, and have always found it
finicky to use, it has audio and an LCD display, it does three modes and gives indication
of metal type and depth. i've never found it to be very user friendly so i didn't use it a whole lot. recently i bought a Garrett treasure ace 100, one knob, audio only. I'm still getting the finer points worked out but for ease of use and the fact i can simply turn it on and start detecting is great, i use it on the beach and in the parks and whats even better is i'm finding things, not great treasures but enough to keep me trying and happy to be out there.

cheers,
JJ

Hi,
Simple one knob, just audio would be best I would think...
Something like a Tesoro "compadre".

One knob is easy, however one knob is also lacking in many capabilities. I believe the Compadre is a great little machine, but it lives at tot-lots and really isn't designed for much more than a quick search at the park. How does the Silver uMax handle relics and the sort?

Xavier- Thanks.

Ace 250 is a good little detector.

You can get a decent Bounty Hunter for a Song.

If they Kill it, I need the On/Off switch out of it! LOL!

If you have the funds, go with the ACE!

I am leaning towards a used Silver uMax or Cutlass II uMax. I kinda want to try a new (for me) brand. That would also be something I wouldn't be afraid to keep in my truck 'cuz you never know when hunting happens!

Thanks

Sean
