With technology the way it is now  , just about any detector is as good as the next . The newer names do not mean better material . You should pay a reasonable amount for a good functioning detector but that is all .   Cornelius

The Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 has very many good reviews and happy users. One nice thing about the Bounty Hunters is that the 4, 8 and 10 inch search coils fit all their Bounty Hunter class machines. They are very reasonably priced coils, $50 instead of the 100-$600 or more other manufacturers charge. The main thing to look at is where you are going to be searching, what type of ground is in your area. If you have mild ground conditions then most any detector will work, but if the ground is highly mineralized then the detector list gets pretty short.

What is "highly mineralized" ground?

We live in Upstate NY. The home farm has heavy clay soil, one place we camp has very sandy soil might be some magnatite in the sand. Up the roar it turns fairly lomely

It is just a general term with no set standard. Mineralized ground is soil with iron oxides in it. If it so heavily mineralized that a VLF detector will not work then it is highly mineralized. Hot rocks are just rocks that are more mineralized than the ground the detector is ground balanced to, an out of place rock. Cold rocks are the same idea but rocks of much less mineralization than the prevailing ground. You can test your soil by panning out a bucket of soil to see what heavies are in it. Another way is to dissolve a little salt in warm water. Fill a clear jar about 3/4 full of your test soil. Pour in the water you made until the jar is almost full. Put on the lid and give it a good shake. Set the jar down in a place where it will not be disturbed. The soil will stratify to layers of each density. The stuff on the bottom is your heavies and likely trouble makers. Hold the jar up and move a magnet across the bottom. Any movement means there is magnetic iron oxides, commonly called black sands. Many detectors just have a factory preset to typical ground conditions and cannot be adjusted to account for ground extremes.

I think the Ace 250 is a decent all around detector. A lot of my friends started out with them, and even though they have upgraded to other higher end detectors, still use them for certain areas.

The only issue I've heard is that wet sand at saltwater beaches will give you fits, but that happens with a lot of units.

Good Luck with your decision!
Mike
