I would like some help.
My 12 yr old is heavy in to treasure finding.
He uses a "radio Shack" detector now to go through old trash piles and woodchuck taleings
He wants to scan beaches and creek bottoms so it has to be water proof

Welcome to our forum!

One of teh detectors that come to mind - which a serious machines for the beginner - are the Garrett Ace 250 or the Fisher F2 metal detector. Both have waterproof coils (the electronics housing is not water proof though), are light weight and the best buys considering their price. There are other machines whch would also be a good choice depending on your budget. These two machinesa are about USD 200 - 250.00 new and somewhat less when bought 2nd hand e.g. on eBay.

Please keep us posted about your son's progess.

Best wishes,

Christian

I would also check out Whites, Minelabs and Tesoro,s web sites.  Their entry level detectors would be fine.  While at the sites you can make sure of the detectors water proof coil and what type of detecting they are used for by looking at and comparing the data sheets.

A good place to see all these and more in one web site is

Most all metal detectors have water proof search coils. What is he using now, it may be OK to use in the water now. Smiley

Most of the entry type detectors will do alright in the dry sand on the beaches, but may have trouble in the wet sand. Maybe look into a
detector with manual ground balance, if your son is going to be doing alot of hunting salt water beaches. Happy Hunting! Ben

All detectors nowadays are waterproof, except for the control box.  Your problem will be salt water.  If you're going to detect in salt water, you need a detector with a salt water control.

If you're on freshwater beaches, no problem.  As has been said before, the Garrett Ace 250 is pretty popular.

I called Bounty Hunter/First Texas several times about their detectors, this was several years ago. After talking to an engineer I learned that the Tracker IV is the only machine they make that has true ground balancing and auto GB. That is why it is recommended by First Texas for finding gold. It is the best of their machines in bad ground. Therefore my recommendation for Bounty Hunter would be;

Tracker IV
Gold Nugget 4 inch COIL, for hunting target rich areas and gold
10 inch Magnum Coil, for relic hunting and open ground
A good set of ear phones, a must for any detector

Important: Always use the best ALKALINE batteries.

If you search the net for field reports by users of the Tracker IV you will see that it is a very capable general purpose machine. Your other choice of the Ace 250 is also a good choice, it might be considered the Detector of the Decade. All total the Tracker IV with accessories is probably a better value.

Last, if it beeps dig it. Expensive target ID machines are only 80 percent accurate on a good day in good ground. While it does let you save on digging it also leaves some of the best targets left in the ground for someone else. The Target ID coin machines are best for shallow coin recovery in parks and lawns.
